DIAMOND RINGS SETTING STYLESWhen you have decided to purchase a diamond ring, there are many ways by which you can make the same look richer and bigger. You must decide how it must be set. The diamond ring should be made to look attractive and also secured properly. The setting of the diamond ring is called collet. It is this part which holds the diamond to the ring safely. The shank is that part of the diamond ring which would go around the finger and the part between the collet and the shank in a diamond ring is called the shoulder. The jewelers call the empty ring before the stone is set as mount, mounting, or ringmount. There are more ways of setting the diamond to a ring. Fixing the collet out of a single sheet of gold gives the diamond ring strength and durability and the surface is smooth and clean. There is yet another method of fixing the stone to the diamond ring which is known as casting, but this method is not very strong and the diamond ring may not look elegant. But this method is cheaper and hence preferred by the jewelers. But stamping method is used in diamond ring when only a small amount of metal is used for setting precious stones. When we opt for rim set collets for a diamond ring, more metal is used to hold the stone and casting is adequate. When a gold and rhodium plating is used to make the stamping look more expensive, it does not last for a long time and may give a cheap look to the diamond ring. Yet another method called Rex collet gives more strength and elegance to the diamond ring. Usually the rex collet is stamped than cast for better quality. It is always safe to use more claws for the collet because that gives great security to the diamond ring. Less number of claws would enable better view of the diamond but there are some disadvantages also. The size and cost of the diamond also plays an important role in the setting of diamond ring. The jewelers have fixed claw count which provides more strength to the diamond ring. The claws if hand made or stamped can give more aesthetic look to the ring. Another factor to be considered is the rim setting. The rim setting is simple and provide strength because there will be metal which will hold the stone secured. Rim setting, if done properly, will not obstruct the view of the stone. The handmade collets were used in earlier times and the disadvantage in this method is the cost. Extreme care has to be taken to do this work not many people prefer this method because of the expenses incurred. |
